52nd European Go Congress 2008.
Newsletter 3, March 28

Dear go friends,

We are now 568 people from 35 different countries who have registered for the go congress:
http://egc2008.eu/en/registration/statistics.php . New information has been added to the EGC website over the past weeks. Firstly, as you can see, the website is now at least partly in seven languages. If you find any serious mistakes in the translations, please let us know. You can now find more information on the website regarding transfer buses from the airports, proposed wednesday excursions around the Siljan region and also a weekend excursion from Leksand to Stockholm. There are also short presentations of the 8 professionals who have so far announced their participation in the go congress.

There will soon be a preliminary program for the Japan days in Leksand 2-3 August. It will for sure include things like an ikebana festival, shogi, origami, martial arts, music, manga/anime and film, and Japanese food of course, but many more interesting ideas are also being discussed. Even after the preliminary program has been published it will of course not be too late to add new items. If you want to contribute anything yourself to the Japan days or if you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to contact us at info@egc2008.eu , or write directly to the coordinator of the Japan days: Madeleine Grimhall, upp07mgrim@entreprenorskolan.com .

Actually we are hoping to have some days or evenings with Chinese and Korean themes as well, if possible. Tentatively the aim is to have some kind of Chinese evenings towards the final weekend of the congress, possibly including some collaboration with the guest performances by the Shanghai Opera House in nearby Rättvik 7-9 August ( cf http://www.dalhalla.se/ ). China related items which have been up for discussion so far, besides food, are music, calligraphy and xiang qi (Chinese chess). But once again,if you feel like you would like to contribute something China- or Korea- related yourself or have any suggestions, please let us know.

The Symposium during the first week of the congress (http://egc2008.eu/en/events/symposium.php ) will get support from the Japan World Exposition Commemorative Fund( http://www.expo70.or.jp/ ). Besides the invited contributions listed on the Symposium website there appear to be at least four other interesting contributions coming in. More are welcome.

Even though there aren't many competitors listed yet on the web list for the computer event in the second week of the congress, we know of a couple who will for sure be participating. Gunnar Farnebäck has offered to give a talk on computer go and if some of you are experts in the field it will of course be most welcome if you take the opportunity to hold some interesting seminars, discussions or presentations of the subject in Leksand. Many congress paricipants may be curious to know about the developments in the field, even if they are not working on computer go themselves. If you have any ideas along those lines, please write to us, or contact Nick Webb, who is the director of the computer event.

On August 1 there will be a solar eclipse, which will be total in the arctic region and in Siberia and China
( http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEatlas/SEatlas3/SEatlas2001.GIF ) but will probably be visible as a partial eclipse in Leksand, more than further south in Euorope anyway. The maximum will occur roughly when the fifth round of the main tournament starts.

Any other questions or suggestions are welcome by e-mail at info@egc2008.eu . Likewise if you don't want to receive a couple of more e-mails like this one, please unsubscribe by e-mail. Please spread this letter to anyone else who might be interested.

We look forward to seeing you all in Leksand!
