EGC 2008 Newsletter 5

2008-06-14

There are now only 42 days left before the European Go Congress starts. At the moment we are 794 people from 38 different countries registered: http://egc2008.eu/en/registration/statistics.php .

Some recent news on the EGC website are:
* The tournament formats are defined now and are presented at http://egc2008.eu/en/events/tournaments.php , where you can also find a preliminary estimate of cash prizes. Emphasis will be on the Main tournament, on the Pairgo tournament (sponsored by the Japanese Pairgo Association), on the Weekend tournament (probably supported by Pandanet, soon to be decided) and on the Team tournament.
* The Computer go event is sponsored by Toshiba Tec Nordic.
* We have 18 professionals registered for the EGC and expect a few more. Some are briefly presented at: http://egc2008.eu/en/congress/professionals.php .
*Yumi Hotta, creator of Hikaru no go, will attend the Symposium in the forst week. Chidori, the creator of Empty Triangle, will attend the whole congress and will be drawing for us. These special guests are presented at: http://egc2008.eu/en/congress/special_guests.php . EuroGoTV will be in place in Leksand, as last year in Villach.
*It is possible now to book online not only airport transfer and excursions, but also advantageous tickets for the performances at Dalhalla 7-8 August: http://egc2008.eu/en/registration/book_tickets.php .
*The national theme days are gradually taking form: http://egc2008.eu/en/events/theme_days.php , let us know if you want to contribute anything that requires preparations.

Practical:
+ On the EGC website you can find instructions on how to rent a bicycle for your stay in Leksand. If you need any help with that, you can let us know by e-mail.
+ If you book train tickets online at www.sj.se you will have to enter a telephone number at one point, to complete the booking. If you don't have a Swedish telephone number you can enter the phone number of the train company instead: 0771- 757575.
+ If you want vegetarian lunches or other special meals at the lunch canteen, you should order them in advance, otherwise it is not sure that they can be prepared in time. Generally the announced meal prices are only valid for pre-ordered meals.

Last but not least: tomorrow June 15 is the deadline for registration at the fees that have been applied since March, later on it will be more expensive to register. The places to sleep are also running out soon now, particularly for the weekend and the second week. Moreover, by the end of next week and the week after we are going to have to cancel big chunks of the beds we still have reserved, which are not booked yet, so it will be very difficult to find accommodation (except floor accommodation and camping) in Leksand after that. If you know anyone who might be interested in coming to Leksand, please help us to spread this message.

Best wishes,
EGC 2008 team
