Programme

Wednesday: August 6th

09:00 Our tour starts by visiting the Falun copper mine. No one knows when copper mining started but they do know that the mine was already operating by the year 1000. During a period in the 17th century, when Sweden was a great power, the Falun copper mine accounted for 70% of the world production of copper.

The whole area surrounding the mine has been declared to be of great historical interest and has now been nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The lift takes visitors down to a depth of 55 metres. Full of expectations, we step out and follow the guide through passages and galleries down to Creutz Schakt, a pit shaft 208 metres deep. Here, it is cold and damp and the only sound is that of dripping water.

Time to visit the souvenir shop after the tour in the mine.

Lunch Continue to Lake Siljan and board Lunch at Geschwornergården at Falun copper mine. The restaurant offers modern Swedish food.
Afternoon A visit to Sundborn, where the Swedish painter Carl Larsson lived. Each year the home of the artists Carl and Karin Larsson is visited by 60 000 persons from Sweden and abroad. The Carl Larsson home is in itself a work of art, loveingly created by the Larssons. Carl Larsson's paintings now from a major part of the Swedish cultural identity. For karin, educated at the Stockholm Academy of Art, it was the family home that was the setting for her artistic drive. All the textiles of the house were designed and woven by Karin and she also designed much of the furniture. The interior is a source of inspiration to homelovers and interior designers all over the world.

The Carl Larsson Portrait Collection shows another and less wellknown side of Sweden's national artist - he was also an excellent portrait painter. The collection is well worth a detour, according to the Michelin Guide, just like the artist's home itself.

Late afternoon On the way back to Leksand we will visit Bosses Träslöjd and see traditional handicraft. The house is surrounded by a beautiful rosegarden where we can stroll around.
17:00 Arrival in Leksand after an adventures day in the Dalecarlia province.
