Around Lake Siljan

We will enjoy magnificent views, cultural highlights and traditional handicrafts. Many of Dalarna's most popular attractions are dotted around the rather large and very pretty Lake Siljan.

Many people consider the Siljan area to be the most beautiful in Sweden and this is partly due to its unique nature. Lake Siljan is Europe's largest meteorite impact site with a diameter of 75 km. The whole district is to be found within the crater. Lake Siljan itself occupies a part of the sunken area between the central plateau and the mountainous rim. This rim gives a unique soft enveloping feeling, thanks to those tremendous frightening events long ago in our planet's history.

Programme

Wednesday: July 30th

09:00 Departure by bus from Leksand for a fullday tour of beautiful Lake Siljan in the province of Dalecarlia. We will visit Björkberget's Viewing Tower which offers a great view over the whole Siljan region and see the well-known blue mountains whose slopes are encircled by the Falu-red villages.
Lunch Continue to Mora, famous for the annual Wasa Ski Race and traditional midsummer celebrations. The race is the world's longest (90 km) and largest (over 40,000 participants) and attracts cross-country skiers from all over the world. The Vasalopp Museum presents the history of this race, whose origins date back to the horrific Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520.

Zorngården is Anders and Emma Zorn's home. Anders Zorn is considered to be one of Sweden's finest artists of all time. He painted portraits of three American presidents and in the Zorn Museum you can learn more about this multitalented man and his work as well as the work of his fascinating wife. In Mora we will enjoy lunch.

Afternoon Continue to Nusnäs, where you'll find craftsmen carefully carving and painting the Dala horses, synonymos with the area and the symbol of Sweden. When our Prime Minister visits foreign dignitaries abroad, he takes a Dalecarlian Horse as a gift with him. Bill Clinton, amongst others, has got one. Nusnäs is the place where most of the horses are made today.

A highlight of the tour is the visit to Dalhalla, considered to be one of the world's most beautiful and exotic outdoor arenas. It was rebuilt from an abandoned limestone quarry to a musical stage with superb acoustics and impressive lighting effects.

Go past the village of Tällberg, a typical Swedish village, located on a hillside overlooking the lake.

17:00 Arrival in Leksand after an interesting day in the heart of Sweden.
